WHAT a difference a year makes. This time in 2003, Southampton four-piece Delays were making waves in the local music scene, but were virtual unknowns in the wider music world.
Since then, the Bitterne-based band have released three hit singles - Hey Girl, Long Time Coming and Nearer Than Heaven - and released their debut album, Faded Seaside Glamour, to a chorus of critical acclaim.
One of the most played and talked-about bands of the moment, 2004 is shaping up to be a year to remember for Delays (brothers Greg and Aaron Gilbert, Colin Fox and Rowley).
One of the highlights is set to be an appearance at the Nokia Isle of Wight Festival in June, when they will be lining up alongside some of the biggest names in rock, including David Bowie and The Who.
Beloved of both Radio 1 and 2, the Delays boast a melodic, harmony-laden style and allegedly clinched their deal with record company Rough Trade by virtue of their passing resemblance to 60s stars The Hollies.
Tomorrow night is a special occasion for the band, as they play their first major headlining gig in their home city.
Southampton University Students Union, tomorrow. Tickets: £8.50. Box office: 023 8067 1771.
