It takes thorough preparation to produce that high quality job application which will be effective in securing a job interview.

The main objective in completing an application form is to convince the the would-be employer that you understand the nature of the work you are applying for and that you possess the necessary skills and experience, or potential, to undertake it.

The space available on the average application form is usually limited. Think carefully about what you want to say and the wording you intend to use, before putting pen to paper.

Your initial research should cover the job and what it involves, the requirements of the post and the company itself.

Assess your suitability for the job and identify concrete examples that will demonstrate that you possess the appropriate skills, experience and aptitude as a candidate. You should draw examples from all aspects of your life including your previous training courses, work experience, voluntary work, interests and hobbies and finally, personal achievements and responsibilities.

GOLDEN RULES:

Your application form will be compared to those of many other applicants who will have similar qualifications.

Your application needs to stand out in some way perhaps in terms of presentation, or via your unique achievements and experience.

There are a number of general points that you should consider when completing the form:

State why you are applying for the job and why you want to do it.

Read the application form fully, so that you understand what the company is asking for and which questions overlap.

Take a photocopy of the form so that you can complete it in rough first of all.

Read the instructions for completion of the form such as the colour of ink asked for, whether you can attach additional sheets and so on.

Ensure that you answer each part of every question.

The amount of space allocated for a question is an indication of its relative importance to the employer.

Be careful about your spelling, punctuation and grammar. Avoid slang, colloquialisms and abbreviations which are not explained.

Ensure that the form looks attractive, tidy and legible.

In completing the form, try to give a fully rounded picture of yourself as a person, for example your academic study, your working history and the social side of your life.

Be honest - do not over exaggerate or lie about qualifications or previous experience.

Ensure there is an element of enthusiasm to take up the post. Attempt to identify the skills, experience and abilities that you possess and tailor this to the requirements of the job you are applying for. If you do not feel that the form allows you to fully demonstrate your potential, attach a covering letter. Check the closing dates before investing time and effort in the application form!

Ask permission before you cite someone as a referee.

Keep a photocopy of the completed form to help with preparation at interview.
