Sir.-Are users of the A339 to Alton aware of Hampshire County Council's proposal to reduce the speed limit on this road?
Sections at either end, including the dual carriageway from the M3 bridge to Audleys Wood, would have a 40mph limit, with most of the remainder being 50mph.
HCC says this will "encourage a reduction in traffic speed and assist in improving road safety". The plans can be inspected at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's offices.
Do you doubt the need for these reductions? Do you wonder whether these limits could be more effectively enforced than the present limit?
Do you think that motorists should be restricted when motorcyclists seem to be most at risk?
You have until May 17 to object to the head of corporate and legal services at HCC, stating your grounds for objecting.

Sir.-I read a recent copy of The Gazette featuring a story about road signs on the A339, quoting John Thompson from the Motorcycle Action Group.
I work for the company that put these signs up. We deal a lot with HCC on casualty reduction schemes. The idea is obviously to highlight the dangerous areas of these roads.
To my knowledge there are no plastic motorcycle-friendly signs or posts, only marker posts, but it is a very good idea.
We were working on the A339 for five days and I was appalled at the speed of many bikes.
Someone has got to slow these bikes down or there will be more fatalities.
