ANDOVER New Street won the Hampshire League's Trophyman Cup at the fourth time of asking at Fareham on Saturday - but they had to wait until extra-time to finally overcome a spirited Horndean challenge.

It was an historic game - the last in the current Hampshire League before most of their clubs leave to join the Wessex League next season.

New Street emerged 4-2 winners to erase the memory of losing in three previous finals, but during normal time there was little between the two sides.

The Andover outfit opened up the smarter and with Horndean looking shaky at the back, they scored after only four minutes through a Nick Turpin volley.

Niall Boden, the liveliest of the Horndean strikers, was just wide and Steve Warwick failed to capitalise after slipping behind the New Street defence before Boden equalised after 17 minutes when he put the finishing touches to a good Horndean build-up.

New Street had strong penalty claims turned down after Matt Styles was barged off the ball, but when they did get a spot kick in the second half for a foul on Jay Mann, Scott Tarrant stepped up and knocked it wide.

Horndean went close, too, when Boden rattled the post but if normal time had been even, the extra period saw New Street step up a gear and drive their opponents down.

Mann might have scored with a chip which came down off the bar before Swayne volleyed New Street back into the lead after Styles had set him up with a header.

Early in the second half of extra-time Tarrant squared and Mann scored the third and with just four minutes left, Styles made absolutely sure after more good work by Mann.

For Horndean there was the consolation of a second goal when Steve Warwick punished a poor back pass deep into injury time.

For New Street and manager Gary Prince, victory was the perfect consolation for coming second to VT in the Premier Division.
