A DENTIST from north east Hampshire has swapped molars for green fingers - at least for part of the week.

Chris Nixon, 46, from Eversley, has decided to put down roots on his lifelong passion by taking over the Whitewater Nursery in Hound Green, Mattingley, with wife Julie.

However, he will initially continue to work part-time at his dental surgery in Windsor and his wife will continue to work as a lawyer.

Mr Nixon said: "I will work as a dentist for four days a week and then work at the nursery the other days. Eventually, though, we would like to retire from our professions and go into this full-time.

"We are professional people looking to branch out into something we both enjoy as a hobby - and this is a true hobby for both of us. It's a very exciting opportunity.

"Whitewater is a very well-established nursery, which became available when the previous owner decided to retire, and we have been using it for many, many years. It's in a wonderful location."

His desire to combine his dentistry with the nursery means Mr Nixon is currently working seven days a week.

But he stressed: "I don't mind it - it's all part of setting up the new business."

The couple have retained some of the existing staff, and will also be creating new jobs at Whitewater Nursery.

Mr Nixon said: "We aim to continue it as it has been running - with very good quality products, and with knowledgeable and friendly staff."

A touch of BBC glamour was added to the official taking over of the nursery and the celebration of the retirement of the previous owner.

Through a friend of a friend, Mr Nixon and his wife were able to entice BBC gardener Chris Beardshaw to mark the event.

The celebrity is well-known for his appearances on television shows such as The Flying Gardener, Hidden Gardens and Gardeners' World.
