BASINGSTOKE Cavaliers were winners of the Michael Rogers Trophy for the second time in the competition's seven-year history on Saturday.

The annual fourth-team tournament at Down Grange is named in memory of a former Basingstoke RFC chairman and president and this year Golden Oldies were back to defend the trophy they won in 2003.

The other competing teams in the DC Autos-sponsored event were 2002 winners Trojans, East Dorset, Bracknell and Windsor Jokers.

The Cavaliers won their league and came up against East Dorset in the main final.

The first half saw the host team penned in their own half and only sound defence kept the match scoreless at the turnaround.

The Cavaliers then changed tactics and started to move the ball around. From a good lineout inside their own 22, skipper Toby Fryer was able to launch Grant Fairburn, who rounded several defenders in a glorious 80-metres run before touching down under the posts.

Fryer converted and, with five minutes remaining, added a penalty for a 12-0 lead.

East Dorset now need two tries to snatch the trophy but again the Cavaliers' defence proved too strong and they drew a blank.

In their league matches, Cavaliers beat Bracknell 21-5 and Golden Oldies 15-0 while East Dorset beat Trojans 7-3 and Windsor 12-5.

Bracknell took the DC Autos Plate after beating Windsor 10-0 and Golden Oldies beat Trojans 12-0 in the wooden spoon match.

Fairburn finished with four tries for the Cavaliers and other touchdowns were achieved by Mark Jones and Adam Wiles. Fryer kicked five conversions and two penalties.
