Winchester City completed a Wessex League 'double' with this comfortable win over their Wiltshire opponents at Lymington & New Milton's Fawcett's Field ground on Bank Holiday Monday.

First half goals from Ian Mancey and Mark Blake were enough for them to add the Wessex League Cup trophy to the Championship title secured recently.

But manager Neil Hards was not entirely happy with the performance ahead of the FA Vase final against AFC Sudbury, which is coming up next weekend at St Andrews. "We'll have to play a lot better than that if we're going to win up there," he said.

"We were OK in the first half, but we got a bit lazy after the break and they had the better of things." City began well against a Bemerton team that included five of their former colleagues in Scott Kemmis, Jamie Boswell, Jason Ahmet, Mark Daubney and Stuart Findlay.

After early pressure, they took the lead on 31 minutes when Shaun Dyke's cross was headed in by Ian Mancey for his 35th goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, veteran defender Mark Blake cracked in his second goal of the campaign after being neatly set up by Andy Forbes.

Forbes then saw a header well held by Kemmis before missing his kick when put clear by Lloyd Webber. Blake had to depart at half time to catch a plane (!) and City never really got going after the break.

Findlay was clean through with the chance to reduce the arrears, but Simon Arthur blocked his shot. Then Daubney saw a chip from 20 yards curl just over the bar.

With seven minutes remaining, Findlay fired just wide from an acute angle and City were able to see out time without mishap.

Smith injury doubt for FA Vase final There were no fresh injury worries ahead of the FA Vase encounter. Skipper Danny Smith missed the game as he recovers from a twisted pelvis associated with a hamstring strain, but is expected to be fit in time to play against Sudbury on Sunday May 16th.

The Suffolk side have already won the Ridgeons Eastern Counties League title for the fourth successive season and have won through to the final of the Suffolk Premier Cup later this month. That game comes just five days after the FA Vase encounter on Sunday May 16th.

Sudbury may be without veteran striker Gary Bennett, who's been suffering from hamstring trouble. The experienced frontman, formerly with Colchester United, would be sorely missed.
