Residents in Winchester have not been told about noisy flight changes over the city, Labour councillor Patrick Davies told the city cabinet.

"The City Council has not been fully involved in the process.

"The flightpath goes right over my ward (St Luke). Why weren't people like me told? I knew nothing about the changes."

However, council leader, Sheila Campbell, said flight trials had been known about for two months and he should have been aware of them.

She admitted, though, that a report had not been brought to the city council.

Mr Davies said yesterday (Thursday), that one of his constituents had moved to Kilham Lane for peace and quiet, only to find aircraft noise over her house.

"To have been told nothing about this until one gets complaints from constituents is wrong," he said. "These trials might be a good idea, but we need to be told the facts. Councillors need to be informed."

A spokeswoman at Southampton Airport said: "We sent notification about the trials to parish councils, Winchester City and Hampshire County Councils and this received extensive media coverage.

"The aim is to try and minimise the impact of noise by trialling alternative take-off and landing procedures. We will speak to Mr Davies and ensure that he is informed."

A Winchester City Council spokeswoman added that the councils mainly involved were Eastleigh and Southampton: "We were sent a leaflet outlining the plans and will have our chance to comment when the trials have taken place."
