Scotland assistant manager Tommy Burns has confirmed that Saints defender Fitz Hall could pull on a dark blue jersey - thanks to Paul Sturrock's recommendation.

The 23-year-old was born in London but enquiries made on Scotland's behalf by Sturrock revealed that the player has a Scottish grandparent.

That is enough to enable the player to become part of Berti Vogts' plans, although he was not in the squad that flew out to Denmark for tomorrow's friendly in Copenhagen.

Burns said: "We know of the guy. I think he is highly thought of there and comes on Luggy's (Sturrock's) recommendation.

"He is an option. We are not over-endowed in that central defensive area."

The former Oldham player, who moved for £250,000 in July 2003, has yet to fully establish himself in the Premiership, however, and has played just eight times for Saints.

The Scots have less taxing friendlies, in theory at least, with Estonia and Trinidad and Tobago coming up in the next few weeks so, once the Scottish FA have sorted out the necessary paperwork, Hall could get the call sooner rather than later.

Burns said: "The only way for us to have a look at him is in friendly games."

Vogts had already co-opted one new Englishman into the squad for the Denmark game in the shape of former England Under-21 international Nigel Quashie.

But the Portsmouth midfielder is an injury doubt.

Burns said: "It would be a disappointment because he was one who I was looking forward to seeing in action.

"He is certainly a big strapping lad and a good footballer - he is also left-sided so from that point of view it would be good."

Saints already have two players in Scotland's senior squad.

Winger Neil McCann has played most of the internationals this season, scoring against the Faroes and Germany last September. That's in contrast to his club form, where he has yet to hit top form in nine starts plus 12 sub appearances since his £1.5m move from Rangers last summer.

Left-back Stephen Crainey, meanwhile, came on as a sub to win his fifth cap against Romania last month.

His fourth had come way back in September 2002, when he was part of the side infamously held to a 2-2 draw by the Faroes in a Euro 2004 qualifying group match.

Crainey has made three starts for Saints since arriving from Celtic in January - in defeats at Arsenal, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough.
