IT'S not the sort of lesson you find on the average school curriculum.
English, maths and geography at Hordle Walhampton School, Lymington, have been joined by a new subject - powerboating.
Pupils at the independent preparatory school are being introduced to the sport in a series of Saturday morning sessions at Lymington Yacht Haven.
Mike Morgan and colleagues from the Lymington-based UK Powerboat Centre are teaching the youngsters how to handle Rigid Inflatable Boats (Ribs).
Managing director Chris Barr looked on as the pupils took to the water in the five-metre craft, which are powered by 50hp engines.
"Over the next four weeks we will teach them how to handle small powerboats in a safe and professional manner," said Mr Barr.
"The course includes safety checks, how to manoeuvre the craft and what to do if someone goes over the side.
"At the end the pupils will receive a Royal Yachting Association Level 1 certificate."
Mr Barr said so many youngsters wanted to take part that more courses would be held during the summer.
He said: "We asked for 15 pupils but received 65 applications, which just shows the level of interest.
"Some of the parents also wanted to get involved."
Mike Corbridge, chairman of governors at the school, added: "We were overwhelmed by the number of pupils who wanted to sign up."
