MARKS along the shoreline of the Isle of Wight have been producing some cracking fish with Stephen Ayres beaching the pick, a 10lb 3oz small-eyed ray at Compton.
Ayres used a mackerel/ragworm cocktail to tempt his specimen during a night flood tide. I was verified by Duncan McFarlane from the Tackle Box at Totland.
Miles Downer from Cowes also got among the specimen when he tackled Atherfield where he beached a superb specimen ballan wrasse, which tipped the scales down to 5lb 3.5oz.
Back on the mainland, some quality black bream have been recorded with ten-year-old Matt Hayes from Ringwood landing a 4lb 10.50z specimen while fishing from his uncle's small private boat 'Jayne Ann'. Closer to home, James Masson, a member of Gosport & District FC, caught a new club record black bream weighing 4lb 8oz while fishing from a small private boat launched from Stokes Bay. Masson used a slither of squid presented on a size four hook along with an old fibreglass rod and a Mitchell reel to tempt the record-breaker.
A first-round fixture in the four-a-side CIU boat knockout saw Eastleigh Working Men's Club do battle with Hamble SAC.

Small smoothhound and bass supplied most of the action during the latest Rovers midweek evening catch and release match held at Stokes Bay, where John Williams from Southampton came out on top with 112 points. The runner-up was Ray Pope with 109 points.
The pool for the longest fish was won by Ray Pope with a 50cm smoothhound.
