SINCE 1966 it has been home to Winchester's foremost amateur theatre company, but the history of the city's St Peter's Church goes back more than eight centuries.

The history of the medieval building currently known as the Chesil Theatre is detailed in a new lavishly illustrated guide by theatre member Richard Green.

Richard was inspired to write the book, A History of St Peter's Church, Winchester, after guiding visitors around the building during Winchester Open Weekend 2003.

Among the historical incidents the author casts light on include the great burglary of 1921 and the building's part in the celebration of the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605.

The book's publication coincides with plans to extend the theatre facilities.

For a copy of the book send a cheque for £6, made payable to Chesil Theatre, to Richard Green, 8 St James Lane, Winchester SO22 4NX.

All sales proceeds will go to the society's appeal fund.
