TUCKING into healthy school meals is producing rich rewards for these children at Knightwood Primary School at Chandler's Ford.
They are among the first in Hampshire to benefit from the reward scheme introduced by the county council's meals provider, HC3S.
All 333 pupils enjoyed sandwiches and cakes outside after the school exchanged 1,800 reward points for a picnic as part of the official opening of its new extension.
The reward scheme is the first of its kind in the country and awards points to schools for extra school meals eaten by pupils. The points can be exchanged for trips to country parks, museums and other educational visits and workshops or to obtain sports equipment, library books and other educational equipment.
The scheme was introduced to promote healthy eating, shake off the stereotypes that surround school meals and help children to learn about food and nutrition.
Head teacher Diane Smith said: "The reward scheme has helped make the opening of our new wing a real celebration. The children are looking forward to making the most of the new facilities."
