SOME pop stars, however successful they are, are soon forgotten in the here today, gone tomorrow world of the music industry.
But however many other artists reach the top spot in the hit parade, Al Martino will always be remembered as the first ever artist to go to number one in the UK charts.
His single, Here in My Heart, was the biggest seller in the first ever UK hit parade back in November 1952.
Half a century later, he's still going strong.
He might not be scoring number ones anymore - indeed he only managed to top the UK charts once - but he can still belt out a good tune.
He is appearing at the Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth, this weekend, with a 16-piece orchestra.
Al will be performing such hits as Rachel, Wanted and Spanish Eyes.
His most successful period came in the 60s, when he was one of the top-selling easy listening acts in America.
He is currently enjoying something of a renaissance, having been rediscovered by music fans in Europe.
He is particularly popular in Germany and his concerts on the continent are invariably sell-outs.
Pavilion Theatre, Bournemouth. Saturday, April 17. Tickets: from £10. Box office: 0870 1113000.
