A PIONEERING new centre for research into HIV and Aids has been officially opened in Southampton.
The centre at the city's university is the first of its kind in Europe and only one of a few worldwide.
Its three directors and research associates will carry out studies into the number of people, currently estimated at 40 million, living with Aids and HIV across the world.
They will look at the social, political and economic context of individual countries and pass on their findings to policy makers at local, community and international level.
Dr Nyovani Madise, a statistician and director of the Centre for AIDS Research, and her two fellow directors, political scientist Dr Jane Freedman and geographer Mike Clark, have already begun research projects looking at the links between HIV and poverty, gender and religion.
They will work closely with other academics in social sciences and biomedical research and with international organisations such as UNAIDS and the new UN Commission on HIV and Governance in Africa.
