Shaun Udal is hoping the hot weather will help persuade Paul Terry and Shane Warne to select a THREE-pronged spin attack.

The presence of Warne at Hampshire in 2000 restricted Udal to nine championship appearances alongside the Australian, three of which were in Hampshire's first three games of the season.

And with new signing Michael Clarke's left arm spin also an option, off spinner Udal's place is under threat.

Udal said: "With a bit of luck we can all play together this season. There is a new ECB directive coming in that wickets must start drier and if the good weather continues I hope we can all play.

"We all offer something different. Warney and I made a big contribution together in the games we played together in 2000 and if we can get runs on the board I don't see why we can't do the same again.

"Michael Clarke is more of a part-time bowler for New South Wales but has bowled a bit in one-day cricket for Australia and it's something he would like to develop.

"I've played some of the best cricket in the last few years because of what I learnt from Warney last time, but at the moment I haven't got a clue whether I'll play and will only find out about an hour before the game.

"No person has a divine right to play and it's important that we get on with it and show a positive attitude when we are left out."

Along with Dimitri Mascarenhas, Derek Kenway and Will Kendall, Udal. now recovered from a long-term shoulder injury, is one of the few Hampshire players in the squad of 13 to face Durham who played with Warne four years ago.

Udal added: "I've stayed in touch throughout the last four years and all that's changed is that he's become older and wiser. He is one of the best two or three players that's ever lived and having someone of that calibre will give us an extra lift. He's the most confident cricketer I've ever played with, no situation is ever lost, he's always up for every single session."

Opening batsman Michael Brown is set to make his Hampshire debut in the absence of Jimmy Adams, whose UCCE commitments with Loughborough mean that he will not be available until mid-summer.

And there are also debuts for Clarke, who steps into Robin Smith's shoes at number four, and if selected, Winchester-born Billy Taylor.
