HAMPSHIRE legend Robin Smith has collected a bumper testimonial cheque for £239,000 from President Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie.
The huge cash windfall was not a Hampshire record, however - off-spinner Shaun Udal pocketed £2,000 more from his benefit in 2002.
Former Hampshire captain Smith will continue to be involved with the club in an ambassadorial role and the Rose Bowl's Long Room has been named the Robin Smith Suite in his honour.
Smith retired from the first class game just before the end of the 2003 season after 22 years with Hampshire.
During that time he scored 26,155 first class runs at 41.51 with 61 hundreds and 131 half-centuries.
In one-day cricket he scored 14,927 runs with 27 hundreds and 81 half-centuries.
The South African born star, who made his Hampshire debut in 1981, also played 62 Tests, scoring 4,236 runs at 43.67.
Smith was only the second Hampshire player after Peter Sainsbury to be awarded a benefit and a testimonial.
Former wicket-keeper Adrian Aymes, meanwhile, collected £174,995 from his benefit in 2001.
