Roverrang 2004, Nuffield theatre, Southampton
Probably the best-known youth organisation worldwide led the way in theatre etiquette as the audience stood for the National Anthem at curtain-up.
Musical Mayhem bridges years of musical theatre. Once initial diffidence was overcome, enthusiastic performances shone through. With some good individual interpretations, like Elvis, Potiphar, the narrator in Blood Brothers among others, and other truly remarkable performances plus comedic sketches as only Scouting can produce, Mayhem is fun.
Sadly though a tap routine could not be squeezed into 42nd Street. Presumably in keeping with tradition, no stars are named in the programme but for me the outstanding performance of the night was Mum in the extract from Blood Brothers. The young lady in question was terrific.
As always in these events, talent and enthusiasm in almost equal measures leap over the footlights to lend a hand in producing excellent entertainment. Be prepared to sit back and delight in Roverang 2004. Tickets may be scarce.
Runs until Saturday.
