EB WHITE'S classic story Charlotte's Web has been entertaining children for generations and now Watershed theatre company brings this heart-warming tale to the stage.
Adapted by Chris Wallis, this kids' favourite tells the story of Wilbur the pig, a runt who is saved by the farmer's daughter Fern, but the real adventure starts when Wilbur moves to Mr Zuckerman's farm.
There, Wilbur (played by Timothy Platt) befriends a goose, sheep, rat and, most importantly, Charlotte the spider.
When Wilbur learns that Mr Zuckerman is fattening him up for the slaughter, Charlotte (Norette Leahy) comes to his rescue by weaving messages into her web.
This uncomplicated piece of theatre is a delight to watch and a great opportunity for children to have a bit of harmless fun.
Captivated from start to finish, the audience of primarily six to 11-year-olds clapped along with the music and squealed with delight as Wilbur made a dash through the auditorium escaping the farmer and his wife.
Humorous characterisations, visual gags and a message of the importance of friendship make this a truly wonderful performance.
Credit must go to Grant Stimpson, for his loveable yet cynical portrayal of Templeton the rat, and proves the age-old saying that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach!
Unlike some kids' shows, Charlotte's Web does not patronise its audience and remains enjoyable and uplifting.
Parents and children alike will love it, making it a perfect start to a new term.
Don't miss Charlotte's Web at the Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke, from April 22 to 24. Call 01256 465566 for tickets.
