Salisbury's disappointing 1-1 draw at Newport IoW allowed elated Eastleigh to leapfrog them into fourth place after a 2-1 win at Burnham.

Although promotion is not quite mathematically secure, Eastleigh boss Paul Doswell said: "As far as we're concerned we've done it, but we'll save the celebrations until Saturday. We'll see now if we can catch any of the top three up, but I doubt it."

Unfortunately for Eastleigh the shine was taken off their victory by two serious injuries.

Ex-Saint Nicky Banger had his arm broken following a nasty challenge which got the Burnham offender sent off.

They then lost giant keeper Colin Matthews to ankle ligament damage when he fell awkwardly after going up for a 70th-minute cross.

Ryan Ashford also limped off with a sore Achilles and Doswell sighed: "That's been the story of our season."

New signing James Stokoe from AFC Bournemouth's Academy was once again at the heart of the action.

It was his shot that was handballed on the line to allow Banger to fire home a 15th-minute penalty and then Stokoe volleyed in Banger's cross for his seventh goal in five games.

Midfielder Danny Woods replaced Matthews in goal for the last 20 minutes and was beaten by a late Burnham reply.

"The second half was a non-event really. Their goal was no more than a consolation," said Doswell.

Two draws in three days have snuffed out any hope Salisbury City had of a late title charge.

After being pegged back by a stoppage time penalty against Tonbridge on Saturday, Nick Holmes's men were themselves bailed out at the death in a 1-1 draw at Newport.

All the action came in the last five minutes as fourth to bottom Newport shocked their fourth to top visitors with a 25-yard Danny Hatcher blast from Adam Barsdell's clever, low corner.

But the Island celebrations fell flat in the 90th minute when keeper Kevin Sawyer's long clearance was flicked on by Leigh Phillips for substitute Steve Strong to plant a cool finish under Newport's stand-in keeper John Simpkins.

"Newport's players were very committed to the cause and I was disappointed with a few of ours," said Holmes. "I've asked them to be winners all season and some of them didn't look as if they wanted to be winners today. It's very disappointing."

Holmes's opposite number, John Linington, described Jon Holmes and Simon Pilcher as "outstanding" in the Newport defence and his right-hand man Roger McCormack felt Ashley Wright played his best ever game up front.

"We played well and gave 100 per cent as we have in every game," said Linington. "John Simpkins came in and did an excellent job in goal. He loved every minute of it."
