THE DISTRAUGHT family of a teenager killed in a horrific car accident has called for safety improvements to be made on the dangerous A32.

Grieving mother Jackie Waters is calling for action after her 18-year-old daughter Vicky was killed when the car she was driving collided with a coach full of schoolchildren.

Today the Daily Echo is backing her heartfelt plea for new safety measures at the road's most serious accident blackspots before any more lives are lost.

The death of the Fareham College student at Mislingford, near Wickham, is the third fatality in a year on the winding road from Fareham to Alton.

Christina Corp, 17, from Swanmore, one of two teenage passengers in the Ford Fiesta, is still fighting for her life at Southampton General Hospital five days after the accident.

Jackie and her elder daughter Debbie, 20, want speed restrictions and traffic calming measures introduced, particularly at the junction with Bishop's Wood Road where the latest crash occurred.

Jackie of Mayles Lane, Wickham, said: "Not being a driver I don't know what changes should be there. But I want to stop this happening to another family and something needs to be done about it."

Debbie, a hairdresser, of Lower Chase Road, Swanmore, added: "It really would be a very good idea. There have been a lot of deaths along the road."

The pair have spoken movingly of Vicky's zest for life and described her as the life and soul of the party. The ex-Swanmore Technology College pupil had been studying childcare and hoped to become a teacher.

Wickham councillor Therese Evans has appealed for highways chiefs to do more to make the road safer.

"The highways authority has put in fluorescent poles at the junction but perhaps we need to look at more signposts."

Hampshire County Council highways chiefs have confirmed they will be discussing possible safety improvements with police in the wake of the tragedy.

Traffic police have already labelled the road a "casualty route" because of the high number of serious accidents occurring there.

Meanwhile, Christina's family have urged people to pray for her recovery. The Sparsholt College student's condition is described as critical after she suffered serious head and pelvic injuries.

She is studying for a horse management diploma and is involved in the local church and amateur dramatic society in Swanmore.

A statement released by the family described her as "happy and energetic."

"She is seriously injured at the moment and we would ask that everyone prays for her," it said.

A second passenger, 17-year-old Kimberley Hood, from the Bishop's Waltham area escaped serious injury.

Anyone who witnessed the accident at around 1.40pm last Friday involving the white Ford Fiesta and the 52-seater coach belonging to Alton firm, Altonian, is asked to contact Sgt Sue Heath at Fareham Traffic on 0845 045 4545.
