WEST END racing driver Jon Barnes made a solid start to the Powertrain Caterham R400 Challenge at Donington.
The 20-year-old former karting starlet took fourth and second places at the wheel of the Bell Microsystems backed car.
It lifted Barnes to third overall in the Championship behind Londoner Andy Demetriou, who won both races.
Barnes led the first race before being overhauled by Demetriou in the closing stages then being bumped down to fourth by the eventual second and third finishers.
Second time out when heavy showers brought a premature end to the R400 feature race, Barnes was only two tenths of a second behind the winner.
Another Southampton youngster, Ricky Cole, finished seventh and eighth in the first round of the British GT Championship in a class alongside co-driver Peter Le Bas in a Chevrolet Corvette.
