Eastleigh missed their chance to go fourth in the Dr Martens Eastern Division with a 1-0 defeat at Histon last night.
The Cambridgeshire side's second-half winner moves them second in the table, a point behind leaders Tonbridge Angels with a game in hand, and ten points clear of sixth-placed Eastleigh.
It was the third defeat the Sparshatts Stadium side have suffered at Histon's hands this season and the build-up to Jamie Barker's 38th-minute winner was all too familiar for manager Paul Doswell.
He said: "They've got a guy whose long throw is as good as a corner and he hurled it in for one of the big centre-halves to flick on for Barker.
"It's the third time now that we've been undone by that. We talked about it before the game, but weren't able to defend it on that one occasion last night and it cost us."
The closest Eastleigh came to scoring was when Nicky Banger turned inside the box and tested the keeper with a snap-shot.
Doswell said: "We gave a good, solid team performance after a long journey and the lads did everything they could. I've criticised them sometimes in the past, but I have no complaints tonight.
"We played very well in the second half, but without creating any clear-cut chances. A draw would have been a fair result, but we didn't deserve to win."
At the other end of the table, Newport IoW suffered a second-half collapse against fellow-strugglers Rothwell Town.
Just seven days after savouring victory over Tonbridge, John Linington's side had to sample the bitter taste of a 2-0 defeat. Rothwell's goals were carbon-copied in the 55th and 66th minutes - both free headers from corners inside the six-yard box by Curtis and Spencer.
Linington, now Port manager on a permanent basis, reflected: "Rothwell are not that bad a side, I reckon, but they weren't miles better than us."
Having lost 1-0 at home to another of the division's lesser lights, Corby Town, on Saturday, the fourth-to-bottom Islanders have only a one-point cushion over Rothwell.
Salisbury City boss Nick Holmes has been named manager-of-the-month for March in the DML Eastern Division.
