YOUNGSTERS celebrated with a tea party as a new chapter opened in the life of a Chandler's Ford school.

Last year the original design for Knightwood Primary School, which serves the giant Chandler's Ford estate, scooped a Civic Trust Award.

It was planned there would be enough space to build a classroom wing next to the hall. Now an L-shaped building has been created which has a music and drama room, junior classroom and two infant classrooms.

The new development has also created a patio area where picnic tables were set up to celebrate the launch of the new facilities.

Oldest pupil, 11-year-old Oliver Shurville, and the youngest , four-year-old Kitty Smythe were given the honour of cutting the ribbon to officially open the new wing.

The ribbon cutting was followed by a procession and a tea party hosted by the county council's catering service.

When it first opened its doors about four years ago the £1.4m Knightwood Primary was hailed as very much the school of the 21st century.

It was designed initially to cater for up to 240 pupils but being in the heart of the booming Valley Park area there was always a pressing need to extend facilities.

There are now about 333 on the school roll and the new wing will play a major role in coping with future demands on space.
