A MAN is in hospital after surviving a fall from Southampton's Itchen Bridge this morning.
The unnamed man is being treated for his injuries
following what is thought to be an attempted suicide bid
from the highest point on the bridge.
He plunged into the water shortly after 9am, sparking a call-out for the emergency services.
Coastguards and a helicopter airlift were called out but were not needed after a police launch pulled the man from the river.
A doctor treated him at the scene and an ambulance took him to Southampton General Hospital.
Paramedics were given a police escort because the man was said to be behaving "aggressively and violently".
A spokesman for Hampshire police said they were unsure how badly injured the man had been by the drop.
"It is impossible to say at this stage how serious his injuries are," she said.
Officers also said they had no further information about the man.
The bridge was closed to traffic for about 20 minutes when passers-by reported the man at the centre of the bridge.
