Neil Davies became the new Southampton Town snooker champion after his 4-1 victory over Park Gate's Steve Cole at the Castle Club.

Davies, pictured above, took the first frame on the final pink and black and won the second thanks to a 34 break and a fluked final pink.

With breaks of 47 and 44 he stretched his lead to 3-0.

After Cole got off the mark, a break of 38 helped Davies, who had beaten the likes of Chris Holland and Kevin Vane to reach the final, take the fifth - and his first Town title.

The ex-pro and Hampshire champion last played seriously back in 1991.

Davies started his snooker at Shirley Snooker Club (now Rileys), then moved on to the Q-Ball club in town, from where he tried his luck on the Pro circuit.

Now he turns out for Churchills on Mondays in the Southampton Social League.

Davies has also helped Chandler's Ford Snooker A win the Premier title of the Winchester & District League for the second successive year.

He played in their final match, a 7-3 win over Churchills, with teammate Mike Finn compiling breaks of 97 and 93.

Davies now hopes to compete in a new £500 prize championship next month, organized by Tony Aldridge and attracting the best players in the Southampton area.
