Salisbury's 2-0 away win at Kings Lynn, combined with other results, revived dressing room talk of winning Dr Martens Eastern Division.
A 935-strong crowd was silenced as Salisbury swept into a 15th-minute lead with a stunning 25-yard strike from midfielder Wayne Turk.
The Whites resisted everything the home-ide could throw at them and might have doubled their first-half lead when John Purches had an effort blocked and Tubbs clattered the woodwork in time added on.
On 71 minutes Scott Bartlett's foreceful run took him to the byline where he pulled the ball back to substitute Adam Wallace. The luckless striker's effort was blocked by Wilson but only went as far as Tubbs who made no mistake to sew-up the points.
Newport IoW had added their own twist to the title chase by beating Tonbridge Angels 2-0 on the Island in midweek.
Sadly they could not reproduce that form on Saturday, crashing 1-0 at home to a Corby side described by manager John Linington as: "One of the worst we've played against."
The issue was settled by a 78th-minute penalty, awarded against Simon Pilcher for a foul on Brian Hardie. Port keeper Joe McCormack brilliantly saved Michael Snedden's spot kick, but Michael Stanton reacted first to the rebound.
Adam Barsdell came closest to equalising when he clattered the bar with an 84th-minute free kick.
Linington said: "From where I was it looked a penalty, but Simon's adamant the bloke dived.
"It was a disappointing performance from us.
"We pushed enough forward to win it, but we had no buzz about us."
Fleet are two points adrift of Erith & Belvedere at the bottom of the table after being floored by a 39th-minute Mark Simms goal in a 1-0 defeat at Banbury United.
