Southampton Running Club's Simon Plummer took advantage of ideal conditions to clock an impressive 25 minutes as he claimed the Romsey Five-mile Road Race.

Plummer left the leading pack at the halfway stage of the mainly flat course around the edge of the town and came home unchalleged by second-placed Andrew Hennessy of Wells City Harriers.

Hennessy might well have made a bigger impact on the outcome of the race had he not taken part in the South of England Cross Country Championships at London's Parliament Hill less than 24 hours previously where he came home in a creditable 16th place.

North Baddesley's Kaye Harwood is going from strength to strength after putting a string of second places last season behind her.

Harwood followed her recent victory in the Stubbington 10k with another win at Romsey as she made it a double win for Southampton Running Club at Romsey.

Harwood finished the course almost two minutes ahead of second-placed Natalie Currant and was in 22nd place overall.

Team honours also went to Southampton Running Club's men with Basingstoke & Mid Hants AC, breaking the pattern in the women's section.

More than 300 runners completed the five-mile road race, sponsored by the Hampshire Chronicle, which is part of a series organised by Concept Sport. The next event is a 10k race at Winchester on February 22.
