A GROUP of Southampton pensioners have swapped the comfort of their armchairs for an invigorating weekly session of t'ai chi.
Older residents in Swaythling and Mansbridge have taken up the new classes, funded by the city's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF) in a bid to loosen up and get fit.
Held at the Swaythling Neighbourhood Centre each Monday, the 45-minute t'ai chi sessions provide a chance to get together and help stave off poor health and disease.
Wendy Hislop, organiser and NRF coordinator, said t'ai chi can also help older folk improve their balance, and to prevent accidents in the home.
"It is particularly effective at improving health and well-being, such as improving circulation, joints, movement and balance," she said.
Keen participant, Josie Osman, 73, from Swaythling, said: "I had a fall in September and was immobilised for quite a while, but the t'ai chi has helped me a lot. It's really relaxing and loosens you up."
The classes are now halfway through an eight-week session.
