The next two months will determine the promotion credentials of Trojans and Southampton women, who resume their respective EHA and South League campaigns on Saturday.

Trojans, aiming to recapture the Premier Division niche they've both secured and surrendered in the past 18 months, defend the slenderest of leads at the top when they face Hounslow & Ealing at Stoneham Lane (1.30pm).

They share the 19-point Division 1 leadership with Loughborough Students and Harleston Magpies, but enjoy a slightly better goal difference.

Reading, two points adrift, and Wimbledon (16 points) are still in the thick of the solitary promotion spot.

The runners-up position in the South League will be enough to secure an EHA Division 2 slot for Southampton next season.

They trail Championship favourites Wimbledon by seven points, but the SW19 girls cannot go up as their senior side already enjoys national league status.

Sue Crowley's crew will kick themselves to the Sports Centre and back if they fail to make it.

They face Havant in Saturday's Hampshire derby with a six-point advantage over Rover Oxford, but will be mindful of tossing away a 2-0 lead - Crowley and Bex Day got the goals - in last weekend's 2-2 draw with Guildford.

A Kathy James double steered Trojans to a 3-0 success against off-colour Winchester and maintained second spot, four points behind Hampshire League leaders Aldershot & Farnham.

She opened Trojans account from the penalty mark and went on an early second-half solo run to bag the second.

Nadine Devereux tied things up for Trojans late on.

Southampton crashed 6-0 to third-placed City of Portsmouth, but Fareham kept their Division 2 promotion hopes on course with a Maggy Kinder and Helen Major created 2-1 win at Aldershot & Farnham.

Romsey's dreams probably ended with a 3-0 defeat in Portsmouth - the visitors failed to tuck away their first half chances - but goals by Jill Livingstone, Emma Lockey, Linda Gregory and Myra Glover set up a 4-0 2nd XI win over Fareham II.

l King Edward VI Under-14s won four of their six matches to finish second in the regional round of the inaugural girls National Schools Championships.

They kept a clean sheet beating St Mary's (Ascot) (2-0), Beaconsfield (2-0), Carterton (3-0) and Godolphin (Salisbury)(1-0).

But defeats against Eastbourne College (1-0) and St George's. Weybridge (2-0) meant that KES were denied progress into the next round. Three-goal Alice Dibben was top scorer.

Coach Carol Peachment praised her side, saying: "The girls came a very creditable second place due to tremendous team effort."

KES Under-14 boys will represent Hampshire in the inaugural tournament in March.
