DOWNTON are no longer carrying the entire weight of the Sydenhams Wessex League on their shoulders.

The Wiltshire club moved off bottom spot with a 2-0 result at Cowes Sports last night - their second win in four days.

Kevin Pelling headed them in front after a quarter of an hour and Neil Archer doubled the lead with a superbly-struck 44th-minute penalty given for handball on the line.

"That's two wins in a row and two clean sheets, which is important," said Downton boss Mitch Blake. "We worked really, really hard for the result, particularly as we had some key players out.

"Matty Guy and John Nash didn't play, Ian Stevens pulled his calf in the warm-up and Cal-vin Cranmer played on one leg."

Next stop for Downton is Fareham Town, who clinched a last-gasp 2-1 home victory over BAT.

The Tobaccomen took the lead through Dave Roberts after just three minutes, but Jamie Musslewhite quickly equalised and then struck again with an 88th-minute penalty after Floyd Hamodu had been upended.

Christchurch suffered their first league defeat in nine games, losing 2-1 to bogey side Andover at Hurn Bridge.

Vince Rusher and Danny Sullivan put the Lions in command before Jason Atkins replied.

Ironically, Andover were the last side to have beaten in-form Priory, triumphing 2-0 after extra time in the FA Vase.
