Southampton-based ferry operator Red Funnel has appointed Tom Docherty as the company's deputy managing director.

Mr Docherty, well known in and around the port, was Red Funnel's general manager between January, 1997 and November, 1999 before going on to further his career as managing director of Svitzer Wijsmuller Towage. He returned to Red Funnel as operations director in July, 2002 and has been responsible for the company's expansion programme.

Alistair Whyte, managing director, said: "Tom has been a huge asset to Red Funnel and he was responsible for the successful launch of Red Jet 4 in 2003, and is now overseeing the current capacity expansion work taking place to two of the Raptor class roll-on/roll-off vehicle ferries.

"Tom's dedication has ensured the programme is on track, and that Red Funnel customers will enjoy an enhanced service when work is completed in the spring.''
