DOZENS of people gathered on Lee-on-the-Solent seafront for a celebration in the campaign against plans to build an asylum-seeker centre in the village.

The event was to mark the opening of the Daedalus Action Group's new headquarters where residents can drop in to get the latest information on the protest.

Hampshire County Council chairman Margaret Snaith performed the opening ceremony after the crowd heard from DAG chairman John Beavis. He delivered a speech on the progress of the protest so far. He reiterated the message to the Home Office that the proposal for Daedalus was the wrong plan in the wrong place and questioned who the government was taking advice from to go ahead with the centres.

"No one wants these centres, certainly not those who look after the interests of asylum seekers - they all say no, not the planning experts - they say no, not common sense or the local communities - we all say no."

After the speeches the crowds were entertained by local entertainer Dave D.
