THE BSO has been hosting this year's annual conference of The Association of British Orchestras, and this showcase concert was attended by many of the delegates, and recorded by Radio 3.
Opening with Oliver Knussen's short and evocative Flourish With Fireworks, the BSO ship was then steered into more familiar waters with Beethoven's Emperor Piano Concerto.
World renowned pianist Emanuel Ax gave a scintillating performance, in turn both delicate and sparkling, of this much loved work.
The Fifth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich is an electrifying work, which seldom fails to impress the listener.
This performance was the most exciting I have heard to date.
Principal conductor Marin Alsop knew exactly how she wanted every note played, and the orchestra responded magnificently.
