MATTHEW Gresswell has fought his way to the Totally Tennis C Squad title.
He overcame seven other players who had qualified for the final of the C Squad Challenge. After two weekends of Challenge finals, it was the remaining squad championship to be decided.
First to play were Caroline Ranson and Henry Duxfield and Duxfield beat Ranson to earn his place in the semi-final.
Andrew Spencer and Russell Johnston fought out the right to be Duxfield's opponent. Spencer battled through confidently to win 6-1.
Another quarter-final saw Ross Catlin take on Tom Cortizo. Both boys worked hard before Cortizo got the better of Catlin with a convincing 6-3 win.
It was not long before Matthew Gresswell overcame Gareth Morgan to progress to the penultimate stage of the tournament.
The semi-finals, with much to play for, were hard-fought. Duxfield and Spencer met but Duxfield was not to be beaten on this occasion and pushed through to the final stage after a 6-1 win.
Matthew Gresswell continued his winning streak to halt Tom Cortizo in his tracks with a 6-1 win.
Three months of qualifying stages boiled down to one last set for Duxfield and Gresswell. It was to be Gresswell's day, however, and he beat Duxfield 6-1.
After matches to determine the lower final positions, Spencer finished third and Cortizo fourth. They were followed by Catlin, Ranson, Johnston and Morgan.
Totally Tennis' Shane Deacon, who organised the event, said: "The players had worked hard to reach this stage, and did not want to give up easily
"But, in the end, Matthew scored three convincing wins to earn the title and promotion to the B Squad."
