Julian Lloyd Webber - Turner Sims Concert Hall, Southampton
JULIAN Lloyd Webber is not only one of the great cellists of his generation - he is also a charismatic and accessible musician.
The intimate surroundings of the Turner Sims lent themselves well to this informal evening, which also threw into the spotlight Lloyd Webber's outstanding young accompanist, Rebecca Woolcock.
The cellist introduced each item, often with an amusing anecdote about the piece or the composer. The programme had something for everyone, from Faure's wonderful Elegy to some spiky stuff by Britten - the Scherzo-Pizzicato and Marcia from his Sonata in C.
The main focus of the evening was Brahms's great Cello Sonata No 1 in E, a substantial work completed before the composer had written any of his four great symphonies.
