A SCOUT group from Basingstoke is preparing for a year of celebration as it marks a milestone anniversary.
The 24th Basingstoke (West) Scout group is 50 years old this year - and group Scout leader Mike Tarrant has been with them for nearly as long.
The Scout group was formed in November 1954 and plans are already under way to celebrate the landmark year.
Mr Tarrant first joined the group as a cub in 1957 and has been involved ever since.
The group has changed home and name on a number of occasions and was known as the St Peter's Scout Group for 12 years, but reverted back to the 24th in 1979.
Celebrations officially get under way later this month when cubs, beavers and scouts get a new badge that they helped design.
Mr Tarrant said he has seen many changes to scouting over the years but believes it is still a relevant experience for today's youngsters.
He said: "The programme has changed a lot and the boys can do all sorts of things, including IT.
"When I first started we either went camping or did nothing.
"The other main difference is that they do tend to grow up a lot quicker now. What we did as scouts they will do as cubs because they're ready for it earlier."
The group are planning to spruce up their hut in Margaret Road during the celebrations and will hold a reunion in November for past and present members.
Mr Tarrant is also hoping to attract new members, as well as group leaders, who would get full training.
