POORLY lit streets in a Southampton area will soon be a thing of the past thanks to a large grant to pay for the installation of new street lamps.

More than £75,000 has been designated for Thornhill by the New Deal for Communities Board (NDCB) to make intimidating and badly lit corners brighter and safer with new street lighting.

The areas to be targeted are the three shopping parades at Thornhill Park Road, Warburton Road and Hinkler Parade where it is hoped new lamps will discourage criminal behaviour that is rife in those areas and increase community confidence.

On Boxing Day, Hinkler Parade was the subject of a malicious act of vandalism when the Esgros Convenience Store had its windows smashed.

Peter Hunt from the NDCB said: "I am delighted that the street lighting project was agreed - this investment in lighting should have a big impact in making people feel safer.''

The grant makes up one of several projects totalling more than £353,000 that were approved by the NDCB recently.

In addition to the street lighting, £103,635 has been awarded to the city council to fund a local tenant involvement officer.

Peter Hunt added: "This round of grants will have a direct impact on local people and illustrate our commitment to working with the city council to improve life for local residents.''
