IAN Calder has made his first player acquisition of 2004 - but he is still keeping an eye out for new recruits should the right men become available.
The Basingstoke player-coach has brought fellow Kiwi Murray Roeske into the Down Grange fold to boost his back-line for the final three months of the season.
The 25-year-old can play at full-back or centre and has experience of provincial rugby in New Zealand with Nelson Bay.
Roeske was due to make his debut at Haywards Heath on Saturday.
Calder said: "He was a target of mine in the summer. But when you're the opposite side of the world just checking out information on the internet, clubs can make themselves look a more attractive proposition than they are.
"That's what happened, and Murray chose to go and live in the north of England and play up there for New Brighton.
"I sent a speculative e-mail to him and he said it hadn't worked out for him. So I asked him if he'd like to come and play for Basingstoke.
"He agreed and arrived last week. It's going to be better for him living down here because he has mates from home in London he can visit more easily.
"We've arranged work for him as well, thanks to our excellent relationship with our club sponsors, FX Management Services.
"It's good for them and us when we can utilise the relationship in this way."
Roeske started his job at the logistics company, based in Chineham, last week. Calder has also given him the guided tour of the town and the club.
Roeske said: "Everything looks good so far and I've been made to feel very welcome. I'm looking forward to the new challenge and playing for Basingstoke."
Calder has not ruled out the possibility of more additions in his fight to do everything possible to stave off relegation from division three south.
He said: "We'll keep a look-out, but new players coming in will have to be those with the ability to improve the team, as well as fit in at the club.
"We have spent a lot of time and hard work in trying to strengthen our playing resources.
"We've used everything from word of mouth, agents, the internet and mates in turning a lot of stones trying to get a goody.
"Murray is experienced and has played on a big stage - qualities he can bring to our side that will hopefully give the backs and team a boost."
