AFTER three months of matches, the older juniors at Totally Tennis finally had the chance to decide the best players in A and B squads with the Totally Tennis Masters Finals.

In the end, 14 tennis players qualified for the finals, all keen to claim the top spot for their squad.

At stake was not just the prestige of winning but also the chance to earn promotion to the next squad up.

The battle for the B squad title kicked off with players split between two boxes.

In the first box, Chris Evans, Jack Mepham-Preston and Danny Whiteside competed against each other. Jack Mepham-Preston managed to overcome both rivals, including a narrow 7-6 win over Evans.

In the second box, Mike Aggis, Jack Brett, Charlie Goddard and Andrew Osgerby pitched against each other to earn a place in the grand final.

Aggis and Osgerby each won two matches, so a decider against each other had to be played. In the end, Osgerby beat Aggis with a comfortable 6-3 victory.

In the B squad grand masters final, Mepham-Preston and Osgerby battled it out, with Mepham-Preston breezing through to a slick 8-2 win.

In the A squad competition, Jake Brice, James Deag and Matt Quayle played in the first box. The might of Deag was too much for the other players and he beat Brice 6-1 and Quayle 6-3.

In the second box, Ashton Bayliss, Tom Bristow, Ben Jubin, and Iain Ross took the stage. Ross, Jubin and Bayliss each won two matches, so it came down to a countback on games to decide who would qualify for the grand final.

Jubin won 16 games, narrowly beaten by Ross with 17 but Bayliss, who won 18 games, pipped both to the post.

In the A squad grand masters final, Deag and Bayliss squared up.

Deag remained undefeated, winning 8-6 to earn promotion to the Team Squad.

Totally Tennis' Shane Deacon, who organised the event, said: "The competition for the squad champion titles was intense.

"Players had worked hard over several months to earn their places in the finals and were not prepared to give up easily.

"The standard of tennis was very high and so I am looking forward to seeing the results of the last final, which is to be held next week, for C squad players."
