POLICE have issued a stark warning to drivers to take more care as the weather takes a turn for the worse.
High winds, heavy rain, flash floods and fallen trees have created treacherous driving conditions across Hampshire over the past week.
And despite a sunny weekend, the next few days look set to see in more wintry weather.
Today, road police are urging drivers to leave safe gaps between vehicles and watch out for water hazards and falling tree branches.
They also call for drivers to use dipped headlights and fog lights in murky conditions - and remember that fog drifts rapidly so speeds should be kept low at all times.
Sgt Steve Wakeford said motorists should ensure their cars are up to scratch before making journeys by checking the battery, tyres, wipers, washers and lights.
He added: "It's important that drivers heed the warnings about driving in bad weather. Ensure your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition and adapt your driving to the conditions.
"Reduce speed, leave more distance between you and the vehicle in front and be aware of the hidden dangers.
"Use dipped headlights if necessary but only use fog lights in seriously reduced visibility. In slight mist and rain, it creates more of a danger by causing dazzle."
