SOUTHAMPTON based drag artist Danny La Rue is putting more than £13,000 worth of antiques up for auction - because he is moving house.
But it does not mean the 76-year-old star is ending his love affair with the city.
He is looking for a smaller home after the death of his beloved dog Jonti last year.
Danny told the Daily Echo: "I love Southampton so much. I would never leave it."
The female impersonator, who has lived in Southampton for 18 years, is "rationalising" his collection in preparation for a move to a smaller property.
He said: "I'm in my 77th year and since I lost Jonti the house is too big for me and it seems rather silly. Having such a big collection of antiques is silly now."
Danny's collection, which includes Regency furniture, bronze figurines and an Italian marble table, which alone is valued at up to £1,500, is going under the hammer next week at Charles Ross Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers in Woburn, Bedfordshire.
Danny, who is still in great demand as a performer, says he is going to use the profits from the auction to continue to live in the style to which he has become accustomed.
All of the antiques in the collection are pieces that Danny bought because he liked them, and he says he will be sad to part with all of them.
"I've enjoyed living with all of them - it's like a love affair," he said.
Now Danny is looking for a slightly smaller home in Southampton to accommodate him and the remains of his collection.
He said: "My house now is such a unique property, it's a beautiful house, and I feel like a cheat living here by myself.
"I'm staying in Southampton because it's been so good to me. It's wonderful. I love it and I always have.
"I miss Jonti and although I have masses of wonderful friends, I do feel lonely and I just need a smaller place.
"I don't want a tiny flat because I've still got my antiques but a nice period place would be great."
