A Winchester headmaster is angry that council bosses have ignored calls to tackle traffic problems outside his school.

Ray Bradbury wants traffic-calming measures or a crossing in 40mph Chilbolton Avenue outside King's School.

He was encouraged when Winchester MP Mark Oaten contacted the authorities about the issue but the main worries were still not dealt with.

Council chiefs plan to make changes nearby but only to ease congestion for motorists in Romsey Road.

Mr Bradbury said: "I am supposed to encourage my children to come on their bikes to school but how can I tell anyone to take their life in both hands? It's too dangerous in Winchester to cycle and the attitude towards Chilbolton Avenue underlines this very well. They should send one or two councillors to Holland to see how they make pedestrians and cyclists the top concern."

Winchester City Council chief executive Simon Eden wrote back to Mr Oaten, outlining plans to convert the junction of Chilbolton Avenue with Romsey Road from the current roundabout to traffic lights and to install two pedestrian crossings.

One is planned for Chilbolton Avenue adjacent to Romsey Road, while the second is set to be installed in Romsey Road immediately west of Chilbolton Avenue.

Mr Eden added: "There are currently no proposals to install any other controlled crossings in Chilbolton Avenue (such as the junction of Sarum Road, which is used as an access to the rear of King's School) but further crossings could be considered for future works."

Mr Oaten said: "It's good but it does not go far enough to alleviate the situation at Chilbolton Avenue. I will be writing to nearby residents to find out their feelings on the issue."

Hampshire County Council is holding a public exhibition tomorrow and Thursday to enable people to have their say on the proposals.
