RUSH-hour traffic around Southampton will grind to a halt this evening when Queen Mary 2 slips her ropes and pulls out of her home port on her historic maiden voyage to Ford Lauderdale in the United States.
All the best vantage spots will be grabbed as the liner eases down Southampton Water from the QEII Terminal on the evening tide against the colourful background of a fireworks display at Mayflower Park.
Despite the threat of heavy rain, police have warned commuters and sightseers to expect severe delays and parking problems as thousands of people converge on the city as well as the best viewing sites leading from Weston Shore to Lee-on-the-Solent.
The liner will pull away at 5.30pm, make a 180-degree turn close to the Container Terminal at 6pm, glide by Town Quay at 6.40pm, pass Royal Victoria Country Park at 7.05pm, and reach Hamble at 7.20pm.
