Gordon Strachan faces a defensive re-think after learning that Claus Lundekvam could be out for the rest of the month.
The big Norwegian centre-half hobbled off in the first half of Saints' draw with Leicester at St Mary's last night with what is feared to be a torn hamstring.
He will have an scan later in the week but, if the initial fears are proved accurate, he will certainly miss this month's remaining fixtures against Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester United.
That problem is exacerbated by the fact that Michael Svensson will be suspended for the trip to Old Trafford after picking up his fifth booking of the season last night.
Lundkevam joins Graeme Le Saux on the list of players definitely out for Saturday's trip to Birmingham.
Saints physio Jim Joyce said: "Claus has a hamstring strain and won't be fit for the game at Birmingham but it is still too early to say how long he will be out."
"He will probably have an ultrasound scan later in the week and that will give us a better indication of the damage.
"But we have to wait for it to settle first, so there is no point in doing it just yet."
