HOMOPHOBIC crime is rarely dealt with by police officers in Andover because so few incidents are reported.
But to encourage people to come forward about any such incidents, Hampshire Police have appointed a number of Lesbian and Gay Liaison Officers (LAGLOs) throughout the county. Andover's newest LAGLO is WPc Celine Roe familiar to many of the town's residents as the town centre beat officer.
Her role is to give advice to other police officers on how to deal with reported homophobic incidents and she aims to be as approachable as possible.
She said: "I have understanding of the issues involved with these crimes and I'm used as a point of contact for the officer dealing with it.
"The reason why homophobic crime has not been reported in the past is because people feel the police are not approachable and fear the repercussions of reporting it to the police."
Leaflets entitled 'homophobia - report it' are available from doctors surgeries and the town's police station - they include an anonymous form which people can fill out to report the crime.
Wpc Roe said: "It's recognised that gay, lesbian and bisexual people are open to persecution and continual victimisation.
"Any reports we get will be dealt with properly and effectively, so people can have the confidence to approach the police."
People who have been the victim of a homophobic crime can contact Wpc Roe through Andover police station on 0845 045 45 45 or the anonymous Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111.
