YOUNGSTERS from the Chandler's Ford RSPB Wildlife Explorers recorded 51 species of bird during their annual bird-watching competition at Eastleigh's Lakeside Country Park.
Organised by local bird watcher Simon Ingram, three teams were given the task of identifying as many birds as possible in two hours, with points given for sightings based on how common or rare the birds were at the locality.
Wet and windy conditions made it difficult for the teams, but a hunting kestrel got their score cards rolling with 20 points.
Group leader Derek Lister said: "The Explorers were excited to spot their only 50-point bird of the day in the form of a great crested grebe. But for many, Ashley Howe's team's sighting of a kingfisher was the highlight of the morning."
The winning team, led by Lee Fuller, scored more than 600 points during the competition.
