EFFORTS to win a grant to pay for a controversial homeless shelter in Fareham will be the number one priority for the borough council this year.

Around £375,000 is still needed to get the project off the ground after it was granted planning permission last May despite a high-profile campaign against the move by residents.

Housing bosses at Fareham council have applied to the government for the money but are still awaiting confirmation that it will be forthcoming.

In the meantime the council has agreed to underwrite the balance while the bid is being considered at Whitehall.

In the latest report to Fareham's housing review panel the project, which is a partnership with Eastleigh Housing Association, the Gosport Road hostel has been identified as the number one priority.

Other projects in the top ten list of bids to the government include an 18-flat development at Laburnum Road in Fareham, 30 rented homes at a site in north Whiteley, 14 homes at Addison Road and six flats for rent at Botley Road.
