Former Hampshire batsman Simon Katich scored his maiden Test hundred before India set Australia 443 to win a series decider in Sydney, writes Simon Walter.
Katich upstaged New South Wales teammate Steve Waugh, who is playing his 168th and final Test, as Australia made 474.
The left-hander was eventually out for 125, having resumed on 51, and put on 117 for the eighth wicket with Jason Gillespie.
Katich, whose previous highest score was 75, survived a few anxious moments when on 99 but a perfect cover drive for four off Anil Kumble brought up his maiden Test ton.
The 28-year-old, who scored 1,143 championship runs for Hampshire last year, was caught at long on off Kumble, having faced just 166 balls and scored 17 boundaries. India then made 211-2 declared, setting Australia 443 to win in 94 overs.
At stumps Australia were 10-0.
