=A LIFE-SIZE statue of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix could be erected on the Isle of Wight to mark its rock heritage.

The man behind the idea is promoter John Giddings who is currently working on next year's revived Island event in June.

Mr Giddings, of Solo Promotions said the statue at Afton Down at Freshwater would be an ideal way of recognising and celebrating the trio of major music festivals hosted on the Island in the 60s and 70s that culminated in the massive 1970 event on Afton Down headlined by Hendrix.

Mr Giddings, a regular visitor to the Island, said: "I think it is incredible that the Island does not do more to recognise the fact that it has hosted some of the most famous rock events and performers of all time.

"There will never be another Hendrix, there will never be other band like The Who.

"The Island should be proud that those artists have played here.

"The Island thrives on its tourism and this is another chance to mark its heritage.''

Mr Giddings said he was looking at the cost of providing a memorial and also the best location.

"My first thought is Afton Down where Hendrix played but it does not have to be there.

"It could even be in one of the Newport squares.

"I would be interested to hear what people on the Island thought. It may be that people think it is a daft idea, in which case I won't bother.

"But I have grown to love the Island. I am not just a man from London out to make a quick buck.

"I really believe that the Island should look to be proud of its heritage and this is a way it can do that.''
